SEEKING TWO ARTISTS TO LEAD YOUTH ENGAGEMENT AND PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION

Open call ends at 11:59pm on April 3,

ArtBridge is seeking two Bronx-based artists to lead a participatory, youth-inspired creative process to design and install large-scale step street murals at two sites in Morrisania:

Funding for this work is made possible by the KaBOOM! Play Everywhere Challenge, a national initiative to find creative opportunities to bring play into unexpected, everyday spaces.

Step streets are an iconic part of the Bronx streetscape and a high-visibility location for public art. Bright, eye-catching murals – created in collaboration with local youth – can bring a sense of play to these sites, transforming the pedestrian infrastructure into vibrant, health-promoting community assets.

We are currently seeking artists to submit their qualifications to lead the youth engagement and mural installation. Artists must be Bronx-based, have experience working with youth and experience producing public art.

Selected artists will receive support from ArtBridge and partner organization DreamYard to:

  • Plan and facilitate two after-school workshops with local youth to shape mural concept and design [mid-late April]

  • Incorporate youth feedback into final mural design [early May]

  • Install mural on step street and create opportunities for youth to be involved in the painting [late May/early June]

Artists will be selected by a panel that includes representatives from ArtBridge, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Department of Transportation, DreamYard, and Bronx artist Laura Alvarez.

Each selected artist will receive a $4,000 stipend. This fee will include the artist’s labor to facilitate two youth workshops, and to plan and execute the installation. All materials will be paid for by ArtBridge.
