OVERVIEW
What: RFQ for a 140 ft x 40 ft outdoor mural in Brownsville

Target installation: March/April 2025
Budget:
- Artist payments: $50k in total: $40k for painting, $10k for community engagement guided by ArtBridge.
- Artist expenses: none
- Paint: ArtBridge pays for all paint costs, including primer, paint, sealant, brushes, rollers, etc, as well as for transport and storage of materials.
- Installation costs: ArtBridge pays all installation costs, including scaffolding rental/install, insurance, permits, etc.
- Artist assistants: ArtBridge pays all costs to one or two assistants of artists' choosing.
- Additional assistance: ArtBridge will arrange all aspects of the project on behalf of the artist -- from paint ordering/delivery, to COIs, to community engagement, to scaffolding rental/install, etc. We are here to fully support the selected artist in any way that is needed.
INTRODUCTION:
ArtBridge is partnering with Slate Property Group and RiseBoro Community Partnership to install a large-scale mural on the side of a new affordable housing building at 326 Rockaway Ave in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The mural will be 140 ft tall by 40 ft wide. We are seeking a Brooklyn-based muralist to create a design, in partnership with local community stakeholders, and to lead the hand-painted installation on the side of the building in the Spring of 2025.
THREE STAGES
Stage 1:
- This RFQ: Brooklyn-based artists submit 3 to 5 samples of their previous work, demonstrating large-scale outdoor installations. Previous experience hand-painting murals on large, outdoor walls is required. Previous community-engagement experience is preferred.
Stage 2:
- 4 artists will be selected from this RFQ and asked to draft a mural design for the wall. These artists will each be compensated $1,000 for their proposals.
- These 4 submissions will be reviewed by ArtBridge and our partnering local organizations and a panel of local stakeholders.
- One artist will be selected.
Stage 3:
- The one winning artist will work with local stakeholders to refine the design draft, to best reflect the values, cultures, histories, and voices of the Brownsville community.
- The selected artist will be paid a fee of $50,000 to create install the final design, directly painting it onto the wall.
- ArtBridge will be responsible for all project costs, including wall prep, paint, rental and installation of a hanging scaffold system, an artist’s assistant (of the artist’s choosing), insurance, and all other costs. The selected artist will not incur any project costs.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Must be an artist who lives or works in Brooklyn, or who otherwise has deep, meaningful connections to Brooklyn.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- You may submit as an individual, or as a collaboration, or on behalf of an organization or collective.
- Must have extensive previous experience working at large scale, outdoors.
- OSHA certifications preferred, but not required.
- Previous community-engagement experience preferred, but not required.
TIMELINE:

4 finalists selected: January 10, 2025
4 finalists present design drafts: February 1, 2025
1 winner selected: February 15, 2025
Community engagement: Feb/March 2025

About ArtBridge
New York City currently has 320 miles of street-level construction. Since 2008, ArtBridge has transformed these underutilized spaces into canvases for local artists. ArtBridge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Chelsea.
ArtBridge is now accepting art on an ongoing basis. Your submissions will be considered for all ArtBridge exhibitions that do not have sufficient time for an open call. You may submit here while simultaneously submitting the same, or different, works to specific ArtBridge projects.
You may submit as many individual pieces or series as you see fit. Series must not exceed ten images.
- All genres of art, except film/video, are allowed (though film/video stills are permitted).
- Images should measure approximately 800px on their longest side and saved at roughly 72dpi (neither has to be exact).
